Dave Bing

Dave Bing arrived in Detroit as the No. 2 overall pick in 1966 and immediately gave the Pistons a backcourt scorer who could manufacture his own offense, a rarer skill for guards of that era than it later became. He won Rookie of the Year, then led the NBA in scoring in 1967-68 at 27.1 points a game. The number is more remarkable in context: Bing played much of his career with impaired vision after a childhood eye injury, reading the floor as much by feel as by sight. A seven-time All-Star and 1990 Hall of Fame inductee, he was later named to the NBA's 50 Greatest Players. His life after basketball carried the same drive, from building a steel enterprise to serving as mayor of Detroit.
