He predicted his own death in a 1974 interview — 'I don't want to play 10 years and then die of a heart attack at 40' — and died of a heart attack at age 40 in 1988.
His father Press literally designed his entire childhood around basketball mastery — Pete grew up dribbling between bus seats and tying a basketball to his wrist at night.
Was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987 — before his premature death — a recognition of just how transcendent his career was.
