Le Saviez-vous ?
The 'Thunder Dan' nickname was coined by a caller to a Phoenix radio station after one of Majerle's signature thunderous dunks, and it caught on so completely that it became the defining identity of his entire career.
Majerle attended Central Michigan — not a traditional basketball powerhouse — and was selected 14th overall in a draft that was immediately second-guessed. He played his entire Suns career as proof that evaluation of non-blue-chip prospects can uncover franchise-defining talent.
His 2006 NBA championship with the Miami Heat came 13 years after the 1993 Finals with Phoenix, giving Majerle a ring in the twilight of his career after his best years had been spent in Arizona without one.
Thunder Dan became a beloved Phoenix ambassador post-playing career, coaching at the collegiate level and serving as one of the most recognizable faces of the Suns' golden era for fans who grew up watching him play.
