Mutombo came to Georgetown originally on a USAID scholarship planning to study medicine — he only joined the basketball team after coaches saw him in the dormitory and recruited him on the spot.
His iconic finger wag after a block became one of the most recognizable celebratory gestures in sports history, later banned by the NBA for taunting — which somehow made it even more legendary.
The 1994 Denver-Seattle playoff upset remains one of the greatest in NBA history — the 8th-seeded Nuggets defeating the top-seeded SuperSonics, with Mutombo at the center of the defensive effort.
Mutombo built the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in Kinshasa, named after his mother who died from a stroke. He donated over $15 million of his own money to construct and operate it.
