On April 9, 1978 — the final day of the regular season — Thompson scored 73 points against Detroit chasing the scoring title, including 53 in one half and 32 in a single quarter, both still Denver records. He lost the title by fractions that night anyway, when George Gervin answered with 63 in a later game. That is the cruelty and the charm of his career in one afternoon. Across seven seasons in Denver he scored 11,992 points at 24.1 a game, and "Skywalker" was a literal description of a player whose leaping redrew what a guard could do above the rim. He led NC State to its first NCAA title in 1974, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1996.

Thompson scored 73 points in the final regular season game of 1977-78 in an attempt to win the scoring title over George Gervin — the fourth-highest single-game total in NBA history at the time.
His vertical leap was measured at 44 inches, one of the highest in basketball history, earning him the Skywalker nickname that captured his ability to seemingly float above defenders.
Thompson led NC State to the 1974 national championship over an undefeated UCLA team that had won 88 consecutive games — considered one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history.
