Byron Beck was the original face of pro basketball in Denver — the franchise cornerstone before the city ever had an NBA team. One of only six players to appear in all nine seasons of the ABA (1967-76), he manned the middle for the Denver Rockets, later the Nuggets, leaning on tenacious rebounding and a dependable hook shot rather than flash. A two-time ABA All-Star, he finished with 8,603 points and 5,261 rebounds and was the lone Denver player to stay through the 1976 ABA-NBA merger. On December 16, 1977, the Nuggets retired his No. 40, the first jersey the franchise ever lifted to the rafters. His career is a reminder that a team's identity is often built by its most durable, least heralded workhorse.
