Wilkins scored 26,668 points at 24.8 per game and remains the Atlanta franchise leader in both games played (882) and points (23,292). He won the 1986 scoring title at 30.3 a night and was named to nine consecutive All-Star teams and seven All-NBA teams. The two Slam Dunk Contest titles fixed him in highlight reels, which has always undersold the rest: he averaged 6.7 rebounds, shot a respectable clip from three late in his career, and carried Hawks teams that had no second star. Hall of Fame in 2006. The 1988 duel with Larry Bird in Game 7 is the game most often cited, and he scored 47 in a loss.

His nickname The Human Highlight Film was coined by legendary announcer Bob Neal and became one of the most apt monikers in sports history — every game featured moments that belonged on a greatest-hits reel.
Wilkins suffered a torn Achilles tendon in January 1992 and returned to score 29 points in his very first game back — an extraordinary athletic feat that redefined expectations for Achilles recovery.
His brother Gerald also played in the NBA for 13 seasons, making the Wilkins family one of the great athletic dynasties in Georgia basketball history.
He became a vice president of basketball operations with the Hawks after retiring, giving back to the franchise where he created his legend.
