His nickname The Human Highlight Film was coined by legendary announcer Bob Neal and became one of the most apt monikers in sports history — every game featured moments that belonged on a greatest-hits reel.
Wilkins suffered a torn Achilles tendon in January 1992 and returned to score 29 points in his very first game back — an extraordinary athletic feat that redefined expectations for Achilles recovery.
His brother Gerald also played in the NBA for 13 seasons, making the Wilkins family one of the great athletic dynasties in Georgia basketball history.
He became a vice president of basketball operations with the Hawks after retiring, giving back to the franchise where he created his legend.
