Ewing was selected first overall in the inaugural NBA Draft Lottery in 1985 — the league created the lottery specifically to prevent tanking, with the Knicks winning the first-ever drawing.
He was a member of the legendary 1992 Dream Team alongside Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird — widely considered the greatest sports team ever assembled.
Patrick's son Patrick Ewing Jr. also played in the NBA, suiting up for nine seasons as a power forward.
Ewing emigrated from Kingston, Jamaica to Cambridge, Massachusetts at age 12 and did not speak English fluently when he arrived — he learned the language through basketball.
