He was a member of the 2019 Toronto Raptors championship team despite averaging under 9 PPG that season — demonstrating that his eventual breakout was a product of opportunity as much as development.
Powell grew up in the same San Diego basketball ecosystem as future NBA players and played AAU ball for years before committing to UCLA, passing on early offers from mid-major programs.
