Szczerbiak was born in Madrid, Spain, where his father Walter was playing professional basketball — making him one of the few NBA players of his era to be born in Europe to American parents.
His father Walter played professionally in Europe for many years, giving Wally an international basketball upbringing that exposed him to different styles of play from a young age.
He attended Cold Spring Harbor High School on Long Island, New York, developing his elite shooting touch in the cradle of East Coast basketball culture.
Szczerbiak was part of the memorable 2003-04 Timberwolves team that reached the Western Conference Finals — the only team in franchise history to advance that far in the playoffs.
