The Full Story
For seven years Michael Jordan had been the most spectacular player in basketball, but a championship had eluded him. The 1990-91 Bulls changed everything — Phil Jackson's triangle offense and Scottie Pippen's blossoming into a genuine co-star transformed Jordan from an unstoppable scorer into a champion.
The Finals against the Showtime-era Lakers — now running one final title run with Magic Johnson, James Worthy, and Byron Scott — felt like a generational passing of the torch. Chicago had dismantled Detroit's Bad Boys in the Eastern Conference Finals, ending three years of physical frustration.
Game 1 in Chicago went to the Lakers 93–91 on a Sam Perkins three-pointer. But the Bulls responded with four straight victories, Jordan averaging 31.2 points per game while distributing the ball beautifully within the triangle. Game 5, a 108–101 clincher, ended with Jordan weeping at center court, clutching the championship trophy. The dynasty had begun.
