Payton is the only point guard in NBA history to win the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award — a category dominated by centers and forwards — a testament to his unique physical and mental defensive gifts.
His son Gary Payton II has carved out his own NBA career as a defensive specialist, continuing the family legacy of elite perimeter defense in the league.
Payton's trash talk was so renowned that coaches and players across the league kept journals of his most memorable lines — some of which have become part of NBA oral history.
He famously held Michael Jordan to below his scoring average in Games 4 and 5 of the 1996 NBA Finals after coach George Karl finally assigned Payton to guard MJ — a tactical decision many observers called 'too late.'
