Ayton was the first pick in the 2018 draft, and the weight of that slot has shadowed a genuinely useful career ever since. He was the starting center on the Phoenix team that reached the 2021 Finals, the franchise's first appearance since 1993, then moved to Portland in the three-team deal that sent Damian Lillard to Milwaukee. He averaged 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocks across 72 games for the Lakers in 2025-26 and now plays in Washington. He finishes efficiently and rebounds well; the criticism has always been about motor rather than skill, which is the hardest kind of scouting report to shake because it can never quite be disproved by a box score.

Defensive Game
Athletic rim protector with good shot-blocking timing. Has the tools to guard the pick-and-roll at a high level but effort and positioning consistency have been questioned throughout his career.
Intangibles
High-level screen setter and roll man with good offensive positioning. Read-and-react abilities continue to develop with experience.
