Shaquille O'Neal represented a physical proposition that the NBA had no prepared answer for. At 7 feet 1 inch and 325 pounds, moving at the speed he moved, his presence around the basket required opponents to make impossible choices: foul him and send a historically poor free-throw shooter to the line, back away and surrender layups, or meet him in traffic and accept the physics of the collision. The "Hack-a-Shaq" strategy — deliberately fouling him before he caught the ball — emerged as the most rational counter, which itself confirms the threat he posed when opponents played it straight.
The numbers from his Los Angeles Lakers peak are among the most dominant in championship basketball. In 1999-00, he averaged 29.7 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game on 57.4 percent shooting, winning the regular season MVP. In the 2000-01 playoffs, he scored 30.4 points per game on 57.2 percent shooting across 16 games. He won Finals MVP in each of the Lakers' three consecutive championships from 2000 to 2002 — the only player other than Jordan to win three consecutive Finals MVPs. In the 1994-95 season, his first with Orlando, he averaged 29.3 points on 58.3 percent shooting at age 23.
His fourth championship came in 2006 with Miami, alongside Dwyane Wade, extending a title résumé that spans two different franchises and two different decades. He finished his career with 28,596 points, ninth all-time at retirement, and 13,099 rebounds. His 15 All-Star selections and his sustained efficiency at the highest volume — 58.2 percent from the field across his career — describe a player whose limitations were genuinely difficult to find when defenses played him honestly.
