The Oklahoma City Thunder carry one of the NBA's richest and most complicated histories — a story that begins not in Oklahoma, but in Seattle. The franchise was born in 1967 as the Seattle SuperSonics, one of the NBA's first expansion teams, and quickly became the Pacific Northwest's basketball identity. In 1979, under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Lenny Wilkens, the SuperSonics claimed the franchise's only NBA championship, defeating the Washington Bullets 4–1 behind Finals MVP Dennis Johnson, the unstoppable energy of Gus Williams, and the surprising excellence of second-year center Jack Sikma. That championship banner, won in front of a roaring Seattle Center Coliseum, belongs to this franchise — wherever it plays. The SuperSonics' golden era continued through the 1990s with two legendary players: Gary Payton, the greatest defensive point guard in NBA history, and Shawn Kemp, the most explosive power forward of his generation. Together, they led Seattle to the 1996 NBA Finals, where they pushed Michael Jordan's dynasty Bulls to six games. Payton's Hall of Fame induction and Kemp's six All-Star appearances cemented the SuperSonics as one of the great franchises of that era. When the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 — a move that remains painful for Seattle fans to this day — a new chapter began. OKC quickly became contenders through Sam Presti's visionary drafting: Kevin Durant (2007), Russell Westbrook (2008), and James Harden (2009) formed a trio of future MVPs on a single roster, unprecedented in NBA history. The 2012 Western Conference championship and Finals appearance announced Oklahoma City as a legitimate basketball city. Despite Durant's departure to Golden State in 2016, the franchise never stopped building. Today, the Thunder are at the vanguard of the NBA's next great dynasty. Led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander — arguably a top-3 player in the world — alongside Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, and one of the deepest young rosters in the league, OKC has reclaimed their place as the Western Conference's most dangerous team. From the Emerald City to the Sooner State, this franchise's 57-year journey stands as one of professional basketball's most compelling stories.
