Biography

Brad Daugherty anchored the best Cleveland teams of the pre-LeBron era, and he did it as a center who thought like a point guard. Taken first overall in 1986 out of North Carolina, he became a five-time All-Star between 1988 and 1993, pairing roughly 19 points and 10 rebounds a night with the high-post passing that made the Lenny Wilkens Cavaliers hum. He retired as the franchise's all-time leader in both points (10,389) and rebounds (5,227), and Cleveland raised his No. 43 — a number he chose in tribute to NASCAR's Richard Petty — to the rafters in 1997. What lingers is the what-if: chronic back trouble shut him down for good after the 1993-94 season at just 28, cutting off a prime that still had years left. He later built a second career in NASCAR broadcasting and ownership.
